The plot thickens.

“Color bearer" 3rd Arkansas Cavalry

Mr. Moon enlisted in June, 1861, in the Third Arkansas Cavalry, in which he served until the close of the war, through which he was color-bearer, and held the rank of third lieutenant. The principal battles in which he participated were: Thompson's Station, Corinth, Iuka, Knoxville, Chickamauga, Atlanta, and others, following Sherman to the sea, east battle of Johnson's army at Smithville. He was wounded at Thompson's Station in the back of the neck, and returned home November 10, 1865. He was in all of the battles of his brigade, with the exception of the skirmishes. He carried the colors of his regiment through the last three years of the war, and had two flags shot to pieces in his hands, and many narrow escapes.

John W. Moon, 4th Corporal, Company H, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, enlisted June 27, 1861 by Gen. Bergwiin for 12 months, recorded November 1, 1861 as sick at a farm house near Pitman’s Ferry, was 4th Corporal until January 15, 1862, then resigned and on sick furlough from that date, 40 days, detailed as Nurse, at Camp Hospital, June 20, 1862, recorded on the July/August, 1862 muster roll as present, relieved from duty by order Col. Earle to play fife, wounded arm and neck at the battle of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, March 5, 1863, recorded at the May/June, 1863 muster as absent, detailed to attend government horses, last recorded present at the February 29, 1864 muster

Note, there are no Company H muster rolls subsequent to February 29, 1864
