So true, Greg ... and a source for never-ending confusion. Blame it on the War Department. When the clerks compiled the unit muster rolls onto cards for each soldier (the CSRs), someone decided to call all the CS KY infantry regiments (except the 1st) "mounted infantry," even though for the Orphan Brigade units this only applied to the final eight months of the war. So, now we see innumerable examples of a soldier being listed as a member of the so-and-so KY Mounted Infantry Regiment, when that soldier never served as mounted infantry. Even on their grave markers, whch I think is a shame. All due to a clerical misjudgment.
