Re: Gen. William T. Martin's Brigade

Ken,

This will be tough to track down to the regimental levels. OR Volume 23 is one place to check but I could not find anything down to that level or even to brigade. A few organizational charts to division level.

William Martin shows up out west in late February 1863 and takes over, according to Ed Longacre's book on the cavalry of the Army of Tennessee, Wheeler's old brigade. Wheeler had been bumped up division command and quickly to corps command with two divisions. Longacre states that Martin did not stay long with Wheeler, instead jumping over to Earl Van Dorn's Cavalry Corps taking one of his divisions. This was at the time frame when Joe Johnston had formed the largest Confederate cavalry force of the Civil War around Columbia, Tennessee - some 14,000 troopers. Their mission was to be able to quickly reinforce either Pemberton in Mississippi or Bragg in Middle TN. This force soon fell apart for several reasons including Grant's Vicksburg Campaign and Grierson's Raid.

There was a good bit of reorganization of the CS cavalry at this time but Wheeler's old brigade under Martin could well be very close to their order of battle for Stones River. That may be as close as it gets unless something pops in OR 23 that I did not find.

Do you have some flags things for this time frame?
