I wish I had been on here a few months ago to add some information on this topic...especially since I had recently done a bit or research on flags at Cedar Creek for the 150th anniversary there.

I believe you are looking for a unit from the 19th Corps...I know everyone is not going to like this and mention the 19th Corps had a Maltese Cross (actually referred to in Corps orders as a fan-leaved cross), but the 19th Corps did not switch to that corps badge or set of flags (which don't perfectly conform to their AoP conterparts) until after November of 1864. At the time of Cedar Creek all of the brigade, division, and corps flags of the 19th corps were square (with a 4 pointed star as corps badge) and designed as follows:

19th Corps Flag - Blue flag with white 4 pointed star with "19" painted in red in the center of the star

1st & 2nd Division - Red flag as above with division number painted in red in the star.

All of the brigade flags for each of the divisions were in the form of 3 horizontal stripes, blue, white, blue with a black 1, 2, 3, or 4 painted in the center for the brigade designation.

The orders that set out these flags and corps badge can be found in a few different sources, and actually predate the AoP badge designations by about a month or so. I have also seen several accounts what do reference all of these styles of flags still being in use at 3rd Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek. At home I have some sketches and images that show the designs, and I'll try to share them at a later date. It's a good chance that the Alabama troops that were mentioned hit the 19th Corps, since I think their flags on average were more square than those of the 8th Corps.
