One option you might want to consider is simply do not have the canton of the flag visible in the painting. The rest of the flag can reasonably assumed to be a first national with the battle honour of "Shiloh" visible in the centre white stripe. The flag can be depicted as doubled back in the wind or with the canton obscured by smoke.
