Re: Corinth, 2nd Texas, Army of the West

Ben,

Since the account of the Federal soldier from the 1st US Infantry that was in Battery Robinette stated a "Stars and Bars" flag, it would be a First National with somewhere between 7 and 13 stars (KY was recognized in December 1861 for the 13th star). It is too bad that the drawing that Rogers sent his wife that I mentioned was missing today as it depicted their flag and at least one mystery would be solved.

If this was the flag that got the "Shiloh" battle honor then that would be on the white bar in the center. There is a Louisiana First National with an honor for "Belmont" on the middle of the white bar.

Joseph Chance, who wrote the unit history of the 2nd Texas, states that the March 1862 presentation flag was not described so we do not know if it was. I have nothing on their company flag presentations from period newspapers in my files and Chance only mentions the March 1862 flag and his source is a county history book. So one of the companies may have carried a Texas State flag or the regiment got one as well and may have carried it at Shiloh - or they could have had a First National with a single star as has been posted already. With the written record so far we just do not know other than they carried a First National at Corinth and that is based on a Federal eye witness.

The flags of this regiment have been a conundrum for many years for a number of historians.
