I know that in the case of some of the US Regulars who fought in the Army of the Cumberland served in battalion strength. King's Brigade was the Regulars brigade of this army. Not sure about the company strength.

There is a book on the US Regulars in the West - That Body Of Brave Men: The US Regular Infantry and the Civil War in the West by Mark W. Johnson.

The author of the article in the Louisville newspaper, Lt. Kinzie Bates, was also with the 1st US Infantry at Battery Robinette so it seems that these men were serving as artillery.
