Brooks Troop, SC Cavalry

The following was published in the Shenandoah Herald, Woodstock, VA, Vol. 66, No. 37, 1 October 1886, pg. 3, col. 3.

"The war flag of the "Brooks Troop" of South Carolina cavalry, now in possession of Capt. Thos. J. Crowder, of Staunton, is to be restored to the surviving veterans of the company. The flag is of pink silk, with a Palmetto tree embroidered on one side over which is the inscription, "Brooks Troop, Dec. 20th, 1860." On the other side is embroidered a white star with the words underneath, "We know our rights, and dare maintain them." Capt. Crowder has made repeated attempts to restore the flag but could never find any of the original members of the company until recently. It was made and presented by the ladies of Greenville, South Carolina, when the company started for the war."
