Looks like he probably never knew of his appointment as Ensign and he never actually served as such.

Garrett’s Company (York River Infantry), 26th Regiment Virginia Infantry,* enrolled for active service April 20, 1861 at Belle Roi by Joshua Garrett, mustered into service May 10, 1861 at Gloucester Pt., appointed Regimental Colour Sergeant July 15, 1861, left sick in Gloucester in the lines of the enemy May 3, 1862** remaining absent through June, 1862, recorded present August 31, 1862, rank of Private, captured at Petersburg June 15, 1864, confined at Fort Monroe June 16, appointed Ensign & 1st Lieutenant June 22, 1864, to take rank June 17, forwarded to Point Lookout, Md. June 18, transferred to Elmira, N. Y. July 8, recorded at the February 28, 1865 muster as absent, missing in action June 16, 1864, released from Elmira June 21, 1865 on subscribing to the Oath of Allegiance to the US, resident of Dudleys Ferry, Va., dark complexion, gray hair, hazel eyes, 5’ 10”

* This company subsequently became Company A, 26th Regiment Virginia Infantry

Note, his record does not contain the recommendation for his appointment as Ensign
