Flag presentation to Secession Guards 2nd SC

While looking through The History of Main Street United Methodist Church, Greenwood, South Carolina (online), it was noted that John Mason Carlisle, pastor of the Methodist church in Greenwood, presented the flag (made by the ladies of Greenwood) of the Secession Guards, commanded by Capt. W. W. Perryman, to flag bearer S. D. Bond. The Secession Guards became Company F, 2nd South Carolina Infantry. As of 1858, Greenwood (formerly Woodville) had less than 300 residents. Carlisle afterward did two stints with the army as chaplain, one in 1861 and again in 1863 - on 9 August 1863, as chaplain of the 7th South Carolina in the Army of Northern Virginia, he preached sermons to his brigade. Capt. William W. Perryman was promoted to Major in 1863 and by July of that year was serving as the enrolling officer at Charleston, SC. His old company was taken over by newly promoted Capt. George M. McDowell, who would soon be killed at Gettysburg.
