Re: Foreign-born southerners at Gettysburg

Tom, what source do you have for there being approximately 3,500 foreign-born men serving in the ANV in 1863? During the war between 2-3,000 foreign-born served in the 10 Louisiana regiments alone. Of course many of these would have not have been on duty in 1863, but considering the ANV numbered around 75,000 during the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign, I would think the number of foreign-born would be larger. 3,500 men would have been less than 5 percent of the total.
