Some folks during the war did call it the St. Andrews Cross. However, when the bills for the Second National and Third National flags were raised in the Confederate Congress, each called it "the battle flag," which, as you know, was to be used as the canton. I can see why they called it that as it was the only battle flags that most of the members of Congress in Richmond knew about when, as I have mentioned, loads of Confederate units used something different during the war and those were THEIR battle flags.

People knew a lot more about history back then than we do now I'm afraid (folks were able to cite classics of literature and even Greek and Roman history) and many people knew heraldry as it was part of European history. Miles, as I have mentioned, was an expert in that.

Happy to help. And I fully understand what your motivations are. Try telling them that the KKK did not use the ANV flag until after World War 2. Before that it was Christian and the US flag. They can lok at old newsreels of their gatherings, especially the big one on the Mall in Washington DC before World War 2. No CS flags in sight there.
