The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: Unknown flag

Tom,

I just re-read that and it needs to be modified. I highly doubt that the Army of Mississippi got any HQ flags before September 1864. The documents that Howie sourced were ones that I found in the Dr. Samuel Lewis papers at VHS and made copies of for him. An AOT veteran sent in sketches of the three types of HQ flags and all of them for Stewart's Corps show Maltese crosses on fields of different colors depending on corps, division or brigade. This is aided by the description of a soldier of the 48th Tennessee who attended the review of Hood's army in Tuscumbia, Alabama in November 1864 prior to crossing the Tennessee River into Tennessee.

Being very conversant with this campaign, Hood's army left the Atlanta area in late September and marched north along the railroad drawing Sherman away from Atlanta in pursuit. After taking Dalton, Hood moved west into Alabama in October, first to the Gadsden area where he first met Beauregard and then after the latter general left Hood moved the army to Decatur. He was there a short time before moving further west to Tuscumbia. He remained there for three weeks due to lack of supplies and thanks to lots of rain, a very high water level in the Tennessee River preventing his crossing. Thus, this was the first time that the army paraded for Beauregard who finally caught up with them. But they brought their flags from south of Atlanta before the campaign began or, at worst, received them after reaching Gadsden. Howie is the one that tied the September invoice of Sarah Belknap to these flags and that corroborates the notes of the soldier who stated they were from Mobile.

We have surviving flags for Hood's Corps, Hardee's Corps and Polk's army/Stewart's Corps and none of them match those he mentioned that came to Polk in May or early in the Atlanta Campaign. In fact, in my files for these HQ flags for Polk, I have no emails from Howie that even mention these flags but several that describe the September 1864 issues.
