CS flags program Kennesaw Mt. Park

Hello,

On Saturday, August 23rd at 2 PM in the visitors center of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield, I will be giving the following program:

RED CLAY BANNERS: THE CONFEDERATE FLAGS OF THE ATLANTA CAMPAIGN

General Joseph Johnston was one of two major proponents of the Southern Cross pattern battle flags used originally by the fabled Army of Northern Virginia since late 1861. Upon taking command of the Army of Tennessee at Dalton, GA, Johnston again saw his chance to try and standardize the battle flags used by this army since 1861. With some nine patterns and sub-patterns used during its career, Johnston’s plan was to form his new command under the most famous of Confederate battle flags – the Southern Cross. However, even then he would meet resistance from some of his units. Despite his efforts, the Army of Tennessee would still use several patterns and sub-patterns of flags during the 1864 Atlanta Campaign although most would be based on the Southern Cross.

There is no cost for the program. Hope to see you there.
