The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: 30th Mass. Inf. (Ladies' Flag)

Hello All,
Rather than starting a new topic I'm bringing back an old thread of mine to ask a question about a different flag from the same regiment as before 30th Massachusetts Veteran Volunteers. The flag I have questions about was named the 'Ladies' Flag' by members of the regiment, and it was presented to them after their reenlistment in 1864. Somewhere a few years ago someone on this board was kind enough to share a fairly large photo of the flag (which was taken down) but I've since had very good quality photos and information sent to me from the statehouse in Boston. Here is a lower resolution photo of the flag in question

I had a relative that was wounded in this regiment at the 3rd Battle of Winchester, and since the 150th anniversary is coming up very soon, I have been working to make a full sized reproduction of the flag to bring to the field (and also to Cedar Creek) for the commemorations there. The curators who have charge of the flag have been very helpful with information that I have needed to produce the reproduction, but there are some bits of information that they just couldn't answer
(and in a couple of instances I had information that they were unaware of). The biggest mysteries to me with this flag are all focused on the reverse of the flag...there appears to be no information that the curators could pass on about it. Specifically if battle honors are on the reverse (either correctly or reversed in painting), and also if the large eagle in the canton is also present on the reverse. I did see one example of a National color from the 20th Mass. (Harvard Regiment) that looked extremely close to the 30th's flag (I believe they were painted by the same company), and it leads me to believe the eagle is also on the reverse of the canton for the 30th...unfortunately when I sent a message to ask about the 20th's colors, the source was unable to locate the information that went along with their picture...so it could be an incorrect identity for the flag.

With all of that said, I know a few members here have done research on flags in Massachusetts, and I know at least a couple have had dealings with the Ladies' Flag for the 30th Mass. Do any of you happen to have any information about the reverse of this flag that might aid in me completing a faithful reproduction? I know an answer may not be available, but what is know could save me up to 20+ hours of construction time. Thank you in advance for any help you might have.
