Your reference to this letter is very interesting. The mention of infantry, if he was describing Egypt Station on Dec. 28, 1864, was mistaken since there was no federal infantry present. The entire federal force was the Cavalry Division, Dept. of the Mississippi, commanded by Gen. Grierson, but portions of the Union cavalry did fight dismounted at times during the battle. He could have been writing about the cavalry fighting dismounted. In any case, if you have possession of or access to such a letter, I and others would surely appreciate your posting it here to shed light on an overlooked battle.
