Swedish color bearer of 147th New York

A National Tribune article by Major James Coey of the 147th New York describes a color bearer at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863: "The color bearer of the regiment, a Swede, six feet two, fair haired, blue eyed, rose with the colors, stood erect, faced in the new direction, but fell to the earth, pierced many times with the bullets of the enemy, enrolled and wrapped in the folds of the now torn and tattered flag he so proudly carried, thoroughly drenched with his blood." The book, Union Casualties at Gettysburg, identifies this bearer as Color Sergeant John Hinchcliff of Company K, noting that he was of Swedish descent rather than birth. The colors were next taken up by William A. Wybourn of Company I, who was of Irish descent, and he was also soon wounded. At the moment that Hinchcliff fell, the 147th was being enveloped by Davis' brigade, specifically the left flank of the 42nd Mississippi and the right flank of the 2nd Mississippi.
