Adjutant Kisling did refer to the new flag issued to the regiment. He also mentioned the fourteen battles to which Warren referred in his letter of March 1864. Additionally, Kisling references that the old flag would be sent back to Rockingham County.

However, on 30 August, during a review what flag was Shank carrying? He flaunted the Virginia flag and even received comments from General Ewell. Against orders? Wonder where the newly issued battleflag was located?

Shank wrote to his wife off-and-on for the rest of 1863 mentioning that he might be able to receive a furlough but not just to bring home the old Virginia flag. It was not until early 1864 after receiving the second issued Virginia flag that he finally gained his furlough.

I did mention in my earlier post that Shank missed the Spotsylvania fighting due to a wound at Saunder's Field. Monger did carry the honors battleflag during those fights.
