Re: "West Point Guards," Co. D, 4th GA Infantry

Jim,

I have very good files for flags of the 4th Georgia Infantry.

The Museum of the Confederacy has a ANV Third Bunting flag in their collection that is depicted on their web site in the online flags catalog. They also have a fragment of the flag that replaced this flag with the ID "4th GA" on it.

Another flag was sent to the State of Georgia in 1863 and who knows where that it now. The first MOC flag replaced that one.

As for the flag of the West Point Guards, Co. D, the Atlanta Intelligencer of April 23, 1861 has a mention of it when the men of the company wrote their thanks to the ladies that concludes with, "Resolved, that the thanks of this Company are hereby tendered to Col. John C. Whitner for the beautiful flag presented on yesterday..."

Sadly no description has ever been found so it could be a First National or a Georgia state flag (as some GA companies did get those). Until a vivid description turns up we just do not know.
