Last two colors of the 10th Virginia Cavalry

In the James McClure Scott Papers at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, Scott describes the fate of the last two colors carried by the 10th Virginia Cavalry. The next to last "met an inglorious end in the mouth of an army mule." The last was supplied by the government to the regiment in fall or winter of 1864/1865 and was presented by ex-Governor Smith. It began the final retreat to Appomattox without a blemish, but was shot down five times (three times in one action alone, described below) and wound up a "bullet ridden rag" after the fights at Dinwiddie Court House, Sailor's Creek, Five Forks, Hatcher's Run, Amelia Court House, High Bridge, Farmville, and Appomattox Court House. In one of these fights, not identified by Scott, he was detailed to command the skirmishers. They charged with the colors "through a swollen stream 30 yards wide, on the enemy's works beyond." In this stream, Carneigie, a red-headed Scot, was shot in the knee and fell, but the colors were caught from his hand by Lt. Bowyer. Bowyer apparently fell and an unidentified individual took them next. The staff was shot in two, and the colors were caught by Tutwiler; all the while the colors never touched the water and remained dry. At Appomattox, Scott determined that the "Yankees should not have my flag. I took it off the staff, and rode to a house near by, giving it to a woman there." He asked her to keep it until he came back for it, which was a year later. Then he learned that she had been induced to give it to Rev. Dr. Bowcock of Danville, but he had left his address in case the soldier (Scott) should return. Scott wrote to Bowcock and received "a touching letter" and the flag followed by express. Thus Scott obtained the colors again, but what finally became of them is not disclosed. He went to Texas to join his brothers but returned to Virginia to care for his elderly parents and died at Raccoon Ford, Virginia on 13 December 1913.
