In the Memoir of Alfred Lewis Scott at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, Scott describes how his regimental colors (9th Alabama Infantry) fell three times during their charge at Spotsylvania, all in proximity to the McCool house. The first time was just before the regiment reached the house. Another member of the color guard took the colors, but went down as the regiment was passing the house. Yet another took up the colors but was shot down between the house and the spring branch. Scott does not provide the names of any of the color bearers who fell in this charge.
