In the Summit Sentinel for May 15, 1885, there was an article about the formation of the McNair Rifles, Company E, 3rd Mississippi Battalion. In that article the writer asked about the whereabouts of a bible presented to the company before they left Pike County. In response, the Editor of the Sentinel wrote this:
"The request of a contributor on our first page furnishing reminiscences of the time when our patriotic and Christian ladies were engaged in the active service of aiding and abetting the McNair Rifles of Summit forward to the seat of war, as regards 'that bible,' is respectfully referred to Capt. A.A. Boyd, if no other surviving ones of his comrades can furnish the desired information. One who could carry the flag of the 'Old Third' so loftily and preserve its honored remains so well for a ressurrection on last Monday's Veteran reunion at New Orleans may have kept in sight in like manner the sacred shibboleth of 'peace on earth and good will to men' whose mission rose far above the victorious banners that floated over the fields of strife and carnage below."
