"Genl., I have the honor very respectfully to recommend J. M. Johnston, Serg't, Co. D, 5th Miss., a native of Winston County, Miss., and ask that he be appointed Ensign of said Regiment. Serg't J. M. Johnston has been Color bearer since Nov. 1861 and has acted gallantly in every engagement in which the regiment has participated and has been twice wounded.
