I picked up Volume III, 1895 of the Confederate Veteran, and found on page 24, of the January, 1895 issue, the article "How Jack Jones Became Ensign," 26th Mississippi Infantry. The article covers 1-1/3 columns.

John D. Jones, Private, Capt. J. G. Sharp's Company, 26th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, enlisted September 5, 1861** at Iuka, Miss. by D. M. B. Reed for 3 years, promoted to Color Sergeant April, 1863, promoted Ensign to rank as 1st Lieutenant October/December 18, 1864, captured at Hatcher's Run April 2, 1865, received at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. C. April 5, sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio April 9, released on taking the oath June 18, 1865, age 23, resident of Yellow Creek, Ala., dark complexion, dark hair. blue eyes, 5' 9", "promoted to Ensign July 1863 & has been a faithful soldier," present at all regimental engagements from Feb. 13, 1862 at Fort Donelson through Hatcher's Run, Feb. 6, 1865
