With regards to the 48th VA flag - in what name is that flag issue listed? I would like to download it from Footnote for my files.

With regards to the December 1863 flag receipt for the 42nd VA when they got a flag in October, that may be a case of late paperwork being filed. There have been several other instances found in CSRs of a similar nature. Case in point - 14th TN Infantry. This regiment lost a Second Bunting flag at Fredericksburg (mis-IDd as the 19th GA) and in late July the captain then commanding the regiment filed a Special Requisition for a new flag stating as his reason, "to replace the flag lost at Fredericksburg." The 14th TN lost their Third Bunting flag at Gettysburg (with battle honors through Chancellorsville listed). The late Howard Madaus felt that this was late paperwork being filed for the flag they lost at GB being done a couple weeks after the flag was captured. That is one possibility. The 14th TN also has an existing Third Bunting flag at the TN State Museum that is unmarked and may be the flag they received after the loss of their Second Bunting. Then, in May, came the full divisional issue to AP Hill's Light Division with battle honors through Chancellorsville. Archer's Brigade was, at this time, part of that division. Then, in the ANV reorganization and creation of a Third Corps, the six brigades of the Light Division were cut down to four (which became the ANV standard per division for a time). Two of these brigades, including Archer's, were given to the new division of Henry Heth. These regiments brought their new ANV decorated flags with them. I suspect that the decorated flag replaced the unmarked ANV flag at this time.

With regards to that flag requisition by the captain of the 14th TN, it is, therefore, either for the unmarked ANV flag, which was issued sometime in January-April 1863, or the marked flag issued in May. I think it was for the former personally. If that is the case, then the flag requisition of late July is really late in getting filed.
