Hi Michael,

Good luck with this one! Since the only year of flag making records for the Richmond Depot that exists is for 1862, their first year, we MAYBE can use this as a basis. Keep in mind that the ANV was at its strongest in the Summer of 1862 as new units joined the army including John Magruder's Army of the Peninsula which had its own distinctive flags. It took some time for the ANV patterns to fully permeate the army (after the Gettysburg Campaign actually). New units continually joined the army during the war. Some, from the Dept. of SC, FL & GA, brought their Charleston Depot flags with them that they could use as they resembled the ANV flags. Some of these were captured at Weldon RR in 1864 for example.

If I correctly recall the final flag making tally for the RD in 1862 was some 700 flags. This would include not only the ANV and other units in the District of Virginia, but also flags for buildings, forts, posts, etc. Large sized flags might only last a few months before needing replacement. It also includes the 40 some flags made for Magruder's army by Almanea Tompkins of Norfolk that were distributed through the Depot in May 1862.

Check out the Fags of the Confederacy web site at www.confederate-flags.org as there's a lot of history for these flags on the site.

I hope this helps somewhat.
