Also note the battle streamer which hangs from the halberd. It has the date May 3, 1863 and Chancellorsville. Apparently the flag was finished before Chancellorsville and the battle streamer was added after the battle. That streamer is also in the collection of the NC Museum of History. The quality of the workmanship on the battle honors varies considerably which may mean other people besides Rebecca Semon worked on the flag. She had at least two other sisters; Rachel and Emma. Mechanicsville is spelled "Mehomesville" and Shepherdstown is spelled "Shepherdstonn." Three of the quadants have outlines for battle honors marked with needle holes but they were never embroidered. In addition, some honor are appliqued on both sides but others are not. It is a most curious flag. The photo is most certainly postwar and taken in Texas.
