I had sent Don Troiani a message in regairds to Jeffords a long time ago and he stted because his painting of th incident was so long ago he does not recall evrything and that the banner of the 4th was ripped in half and Jeffords was bayoneted after stabbing the confederate that had grabbed the banner. There not mention of him weilding a pistol but party of the 4th sortied to save their colonel and dragged him off the field with the banner. I believe that in the fight it was ripped in half wth one part retained by the confederates but the other was carried away with jeffords.
