These are flags, about 2' x 2' in size. From my readings they are placed on 'dowels' and the dowels placed inside rifle barrels or place on small flag poles. They are located on the far left and far right of a regiment, in order to keep the regiment alined. I will be at Memorial Hall this upcoming weekend and will look at that flag. Generally a company flag is fairly large.
