Colors of 22nd North Carolina at Gettysburg

Sergeant John Turner of Company M, 22nd North Carolina Infantry, wrote that on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg "... I was with the flag of our regiment and saw two men, who carried it, killed, and another shot in the knee who lost his leg and was captured." Turner's wartime experiences were carried in the Asheboro Courier from 29 January through 2 July 1914, and excerpts were reprinted in The Randolph Hornets in the Civil War, A History and Roster of Company M, 22nd North Carolina Regiment, by Wallace E. Jarrell, 2004. In North Carolina Troops 1861-1865, A Roster, Vol. VII Infantry, mention is made that Pvt. Lawrence M. Birkhead of Company L was wounded on 3 July while acting as color bearer. According to a Civil War News article, the flag of the 22nd carried at Gettysburg was unveiled in January 2011 by the North Carolina Museum of History after conservation was done on it. This flag had been captured during the 3 July Confederate assault on Cemetery Ridge by Pvt. Michael McDonough of the 42nd New York Regiment. It looks to be beautifully restored.
