Color bearer of Stuart's Horse Artillery

The following diary entry was made by Charles William McVicar, Chew's Battery, Horse Artillery, which was found at the Library of Virginia in Richmond (call # 29971). 12 June 1864, battle at Trevillian [Station]: "John 'Jap' Pierce, the battalion color bearer from Jefferson County, held the flag too close and was hit by six bullets. Sent him back to Charlottesville to the ladies who presented us the flag, they will take special care of him."
