They probably look a lot like 6 pointed flags in the Revolution looked. Take a look a this link http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-washi.html

Now the flag here is in dispute and probably is not really Washington's "HQ Flag" but the original does exist and is a good example of 6 pointed stars from the Revolution.
