Re: Flags captured after Nashville, Tenn battle

I will agree with you on that Bill. In the book "In the Lion's Mouth" by Derek Smith, their is a few pages on Rucker's flag being captured.

On page 94, "Union private Berry Watson of Company C, 12th Tennessee Cavalry regiment, snatched one of Rucker's flags, killing the Confederate standard bearer in the process."

Same page, "Moments later, a Southern officer not realizing Watson was a Federal, rode up and said, "Stick to your colors, boys!". Watson cooly replied, "I'll do it," before galloping away with his trophy. Spalding promoted Watson to sergeant that night for his exploit.

This part is for everyone, "The Second and Fourth Tennessee Cavalry regiments (USA) were ambushed by General Forrest and ran down the hill. There is no reports of a flag captured in the book. General Forrest reported: 150 Yanks killed/wounded. "Many" prisoners and horses captured.

That would be the small skirmish of "Sugar Creek, Tennessee", Monday, December 26th, 1864.

I have another report, on General Forrest and the rear guard. On Sunday, December 25th, 1864, General Forrest set up an ambush on "Anthony's Hill". The Seventh Ohio Cavalry Regiment and Sixteenth Illinois Cavalry Regiment were the attackers. General Forrest and his "Rear Guard" counter-attacked and captured, One 12-Pound Napoleon from (4th US, "I" Battery). No mention if either Union cavalry regiment lost any flags.

Thank you for any help!
