One of the best accounts of this flag's development can be found in the underrated and under-appreciated "Colors And Blood" book by Robert Bonner. Very well researched, my only caveat was that he did not clarify the two flags that actually came to be called "the Southern Cross." One had the cross of St. George, and some articles about these flags mention the celestial constellation of the same name which could not be seen in the Northern Hemisphere and the other was the ANV style battle flag. You have to read the book a bit carefully when he brings up this flag name.
