Re: Early War VA Action under GA Flag

Hi Greg & All,

I thought and/or I was referring to the Colonial & Rev. War period on the flags of Georgia Militia and other periods, and armies was added to muddy the waters, plus, I didn’t know Texican was one of the English Colonies must have been a surprise to Spain. The Texas flag as a State of the U. S. dates 1845 and then again in 1865. :)
New Jersey’s flag dates from 28 February 1780, the buff field color of todays 1896 flag remembers the buff color facing of the New Jersey Militia of the Rev. War.

On Virginia, meant to type they adopted the first Seal of the Colonies, 1619, I think, I will double check when I get back to the shop. 1776 they adopted another design. Correct on the blue field (political) State flag, 1861. If the Colonial Virginia Militia used a flag it would have been under British flag rules, blue, red or white fields but I don’t think the early militia units used a flag unless they would be on the march with British regulars.

Continental Army, Congress & Gen. Washington’s General Orders 2 October 1779: State/Colonies Militia did not necessarily follow the orders. Samples of Continental Militia flags survive with Seals / Coat of Arms in the center of the field with the national emblem in the canton; 13 stripes or 13 stars similar to pre war colonial militia flags with the British emblem in the canton.

Artillery : Facing Scarlet, Linings Scarlet

Light Dragoons; Facing White, Linings White

Infantry: Facing White, Linings White
New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, & Connecticut.

Infantry; Facing Buff, Linings White
New York, & New Jersey

Infantry; Facing Red, Linings White
Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland & Virginia

Infantry; Facing Blue, Linings White
North Carolina, South Carolina & Georgia.

Also the lack of correct colors of silk for the Standards, substitutes were used. The old story of the use of wedding dresses for flags.

Happy Trails!
