Battle of Cumberland Church, VA

While researching on the battle of Cumberland Church, Va, which was the last battlefield victory for the ANV. I came across information that Colonel George W. Scott's Union brigade attacked and was repulsed by BG. G.T. Anderson's brigade.

The 5th New Hampshire (Battalion Strength) was one unit that did lose a flag. The 5th New Hampshire's regimental history book, written by Make Pride and Mark Travis, on page 255, "The flag of the 5th New Hampshire was captured".

Captain Ricker, led six companies of the 5th NH in the attack, twenty-one were killed and seventy more that "remained in his command", were captured.

Two days later, just hours before the surrender on April 9th, 1865, somehow the 5th NH found/got their flag back.

Colonel Scott's brigade also had the: 26th Michigan, 2nd NY HA, 61st NY, 81st PA and 140th PA.

This book/site claims that Colonel Scott's brigade and many officers and "Colors" were captured.

If for some reason that link does not work, go to "Google Books", "A Record of events in Norfolk Country, Va". By John W.H. Porter, page 285.

I had stop searching for captured Union flags for the past six months, in order to put together everything I have found over the last twenty, twenty-one years. That will have to wait till I finish my last tour in Afghanistan and retire in a year and half. Finally....I can do this full time, at the LOC/NA. I will be about 118 when I get this all figured out, lol.

Have a good day,

Shawn Prouty
