8th U.S. Colored Troops, Company B

Hello, I am helping a friend with her family history. I am researching a William H. Wilson, born abt 1843 in Virginia. In 1863, he enlisted in the 8th U.S. Colored Troops, Corporal, mustered out 1865. He enlisted at Utica, New York. He may have lived in Norfolk, Virginia (1910 census) and died in "U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (1866-1938) in Hampton, Virginia in 1916 and is buried there at the New National Cemetery. He lived in Norfolk, VA but I can't understand why he would have enlisted in Utica, NY? Also, I would like to learn if there was a regimental flag for his unit? Thank you, Peggy Dyas
