Re: 12th corps 2nd Division 3rd Brigade flag

The Division emblem was a white star and some of its men referred to themselves as "white stars." While there is no mention of the brigade flag at Gettysburg by sources in my collection, there are several mentions of the regimental flags (60-78-102-137-149 NY). Captain John Peck of the 78th in New York at Gettysburg, II: 629, states that all of the regimental flags in the brigade bore the emblem of the Empire State (New York). Incidentally, the grave of brigade commander George Sears Greene is in a family plot across from the Warwick, Rhode Island police benevolent association. As an aside, during the Gettysburg campaign, Greene was accompanied by his 13 year-old-son, Francis Vinton Greene. Francis was a keen observer and meticulous as to time, which makes his diary very interesting and an important record (his diary is in the manuscript collection of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville). A sample from his June 18 (1863) entry: "Left camp at 8 am, being the last brigade, having been the first the day before. Halted from 8:23 to 8:35, Washington road 9:05, Drainesville 9:30. Halt every 1 1/2 hours. Crossed Broad Run 2:10. Tremendous shower ... cooled air considerably. Halt Goose Creek about 3 pm. Marched 12 miles. The 1st and 2nd Brigades crossed Goose Creek that night on a very shaky concern of a bridge but we remained on the other side. Placed 2 pieces of artillery in position to defend the ford."
