I hope it won't be out of place to offer a reminder that, as we read the correspondence and journals of the time, "going home to recruit" meant (in modern terminology), "going home to recover" (from illness, wound), more often than not.

I don't recall having seen anything suggestive of the situation described, in which a senior NCO accompanied a resigned colonel as an honor guard to his home, although it does call to mind circumstances in which the body of, for example, an especially beloved general KIA, was accompanied to the place of interment by a staff member. On the other hand, I'm seldom surprised by unusual happenings cropping up in anything Confederate.
