A man I occasionally work with in a nearby town knew of my interest in the War Between the States, and told me (a few years ago) that his former wife's ancestor was on Grant's staff when he was in the western theater, and a number of items (including a large flag) had been handed down to her. He wasn't clear on the flag details, but I was left with the impression that it was probably a First National, possibly a garrison size, from the Vicksburg campaign.

I hadn't thought about this for some time, but this thread triggered my memories.

I'll start asking some questions.
