Re: 3rd Texas Cavalry Black Flag Captured

Hi Ed,

Interesting citation. Where is it from?

A couple problems with it - the Battle of New Hope Church in Georgia was part of the Atlanta Campaign and it took place on May 25, 1864. Secondly, it was a resounding Confederate victory with AP Stewart's TN Division repulsing the attack of Hooker's 20th Corps by itself pretty much. Thirdly, the 3rd Texas Cavalry was in William Hicks Jackson's Division of cavalry and they were not at New Hope Church but were posted some miles SW of there at Dallas, GA. New Hope Church was an all-infantry fight.

In the Federal movement towards Pickett's Mill, to the NE of NHC, John Kelly's Division of Wheeler's Cavalry were engaged in a delaying action against Federal units (Howard's Corps I believe) but they were not ay NHC either. So far as I know, and I have studied the Atlanta Campaign for nearly 30 years, Kelly's troopers were the only ones actively engaged.

I have the 3rd Texas Cavalry losing their Mobile Depot battle flag issued in October 1863 on August 20, 1864 while fighting against the Union cavalry who were raiding the railroads south of Atlanta. That flag is in a Texas museum today.
