Captured CS Guidon flag

A fraternity brother has obtain a small (what I believe to be) guidon flag. The paper work with the flag includes the Union soldier's name, picture, regt (10th VT) and when and where it was captured. (Cold Harbor June 1st 1864)
What I would to know:
Is it really a guidon flag? (it is made of linen and a textile specialist has confirmed it has 19th century sewing characteristics.) The park historian at Kennesaw Mtn NBP believes it to be a guidon. The problem is there were only infantry units in front of the 10th VT. Also there was a battery of artillery nearby for him to capture it, I don't know of infantry units carring guidons in 1864.

What kind of value is it worth with it's documentation?

I don't know how to post the pictures I have to a web site but will be happy to email the pictures I have, including close ones of the handmade star. Just email me.
