In Response To: 29th and 34th VA Infantry ()

The 29th Virginia Infantry Regiment Information.

Colonel Alfred Cleon Moore. 1861-1863 (Resigned in April 1863)
Colonel James Giles (1863-1865)

Organized November 5th, 1861. "Seven companies of Virginia Infantry under Moore," and "three companies of Virginia Infantry at Pound Gap." Five companies A-E were in the "Pound Gap Battalion" aka 21st Battalion. They were illegally assigned to the 29th Va by mistake.

Company A: Capt. William McJessee
Company B: Capt. William R. B. Horne
Company C: Carroll Marksmen
Company D: Rifle Rangers
Company E: Capt. Alexander Hayne
Company F: Capt. Anderson Well
Company G: Capt. Edwin R. Smith
Company H: Capt. Ebenezer Bruster
Company I: Formerly called company "K"

34th Virginia Infantry, aka 4th Regiment Heavy Artillery.

Colonel John Thomas Goode, (1862-1865)

Formerly the 4th Regiment Va Heavy Artillery. Was organized on May 15th, 1862, to serve either as artillery or infantry. It was assigned to duty as infantry, dated May 23rd, 1862. The designation of the regiment was changed to (34th Va Infantry Regiment), March 8th, 1864.

Four of the companies were previously mustered as the 4th Regt. of Artillery, which appears to have been a designation of the Battalion of Field Artillery commanded by Col. Thomas J. Page and Capt. Thomas B. Montague.

Company A: Gloucester Artillery
Company B: Mecklenburg Heavy Artillery
Company C: Davis Artillery
Company D: Green Rough and Readys
Company E: Piedmont Battery

These Virginia Regiments never formed: 35th, 39th and 43rd.

The 39th Virginia Regiment was raised at the Eastern Shore of Virginia and failed to cross the Potomac River. Thus disbanded.

The 20th Virginia Regiment was disbanded in October 1862. Two companies were captured at Rich Mountain (West Virginia), Five companies were disbanded and one company transferred to another regiment. The two remaining companies were assigned to the 59th Virginia Infantry. The two companies captured were "Company G, Hampden-Sydney Boys" and "Company H, Clover Rifles".

This book lists all Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, Heavy Artillery, battalions and companies of everything. Local defense troops, Militia companies, Reserves, armory companies, etc.

I picked this book up about 20 years ago at Harper's Ferry. The book was not for sale, but the lady saw my interest in it and sold it to me for 10 bucks?? Worth every penny, I would have paid $100 for it.

I hope that helps,
