Re: Unique Flag on Canteen N.C. Museum

There is a letter dated 1891 from Edward Wooten to his sister, Mrs. Alfred May, thanking her for painting his canteen and sending it to her. She probably painted the M1858 canteen of her husband Alfred May at the same time. Based on the letter Wooten's sister (Mrs. Alfred May) found her brother, Edward Wooten's canteen, painted it and sent it to her brother Edward as a gift in 1891. He responded that the canteen brought back many memories of the war and his service. He served in a North Carolina cavalry regiment and his brother-in-law Alfred May served in the 61st North Carolina. The collection of Alfred May items in the North Carolina Museum of History is probably the largest collection of items associated with a North Carolina enlisted soldier; and perhaps any Confederate enlisted soldier. The Alfred May canteen is in much better condition than the Edward Wooten canteen. Tom Belton
