46th Virginia color bearer Leroy Cox

At the Special Collections library at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville are the memoirs of Leroy Wesley Cox (MSS 5049), who served in Carrington's battery and also with the 46th Virginia. He related this account in the fall of 1934, when he was 89 years old, but his mind was said to still be sharp and he could recall details behind several incidents during the war. However, the memoirs indicate the following incident occurred on 31 March 1864, a couple of days following the battle of Hatcher's Run, which does not appear to be the correct date. In any event, Cox said he was the color bearer of the 46th Virginia during a confused fight trying to contain a Federal advance. He writes that of the seven other men in the color guard, three were killed and four wounded. Cox was not injured although a shot passed through his clothes at the shoulder. He says the flag was shot to ribbons and the staff was broken by three bullets. After the shaft was shot away, Cox first carried the flag on his arm, and then tucked it under his coat. Although slightly injured and facing substantial odds, he managed to make a harrowing escape with the concealed flag.
