bunting types

Gents,

Wool bunting was either single ply (loose weave) or double ply (tight weave - about 35 - 37 threads per inch). AOT flags were pretty much single ply as are the Mobile Depot flags that I have seen (but I have not seen them all in person). ANV flags were double ply bunting.

English wool bunting is set by strict standards of manufacture in Britain and it had to pass these stringent inspections in order to be called "bunting."

Naval flags and many large storm and garrison flags were also single ply bunting which allows a passing through of some of the air that works against the flag. I saw a US storm flag some years ago that flew over the US fort in Waverly, TN and it was single ply bunting.
