Re: No stars on the obverse
Greg,
The flag of the 11th Texas Volunteer Battalion (Speight's Battalion) is another First National that apparently only has stars on one side. The flag is currently housed at the Sam Houston Research Center in Liberty, Texas. I am friends with one of the librarians there and she told me that an attempt was made to remove the flag from the backing material to which it had been attached and it was discovered that there were no stars on the reverse side of the canton. The flag is also unusual for several other reasons. The 11 stars are arranged in 3 rows of 3 with a bottom row consisting of only two and my friend insists that the center stripe is not white but pale green. (It looks like dingy white to me)
