The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: FORGET ALABAMA!

Hi Ben,

If that Alabama company was his escort and this is the flag they bore that would be a fit I would think in terms of title.

When brigades and divisions of the CS army (and corps) had "brigade," "division," or "Corps" flags, for the most part they tended to be whatever national CS flag was in use at the time. The Army of Tennessee did create a special series of HQ flags in early 1864 however, that were color coded to corps and on down to brigades. Madaus had these in his AOT flags book. The Army of Mississippi/aka Polk's Corps, created a similar system in the Fall of 1864 before the TN campaign.

These flags tended to mark where the corps, division or brigade commander were off the battlefield as well as, sometimes, on it. The ANV may have had something starting along these lines as well based on an HQ flag of unique design for Gen. Henry Heth that exists.
