Model 1855 Sharps Carbine

Can anyone direct me to a listing of weapons issued to the 2nd Battalion Massachusetts Cavalry? Here is what I'm trying to accomplish. We have in our museum a Sharps carbine dug on the battlefield of Baton Rouge, La from Aug. 5th, 1862. The weapon is still in pretty decent shape as it was dug in 1900, thus the stock remains and the serial number is discernible. One would think that such a weapon would be issued to cavalry only but perhaps couriers, scouts etc. had them also. The only CS cavalry at Baton Rouge would have been the 9th Battalion Louisiana Partisan Rangers (not sure they were mounted at the time). The only US cavalry I can find is Company B of the 2nd Battalion Massachusetts Cavalry. This company was later merged into the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry which was all over Port Hudson and outlying areas. The weapon is now a part of the collection at Camp Moore. I'm hoping to track the serial number to this US cavalry outfit if records exist about weapons issued to them or perhaps someone might know how to reverse find the unit with the serial number. Appreciate any guidance on this.
