The Arms & Equipment in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Inventory of 4th Virginia Cavalry weapons

Thanks. It turns out that the Museum of the Confederacy (now the American Civil War Museum) has several arms and ammunition reports from January 1864 to March 1865 for this regiment. It is interesting to compare the 18 November 1863 report with the 12 January 1864 report, which is as follows (as listed in the MOC magazine of Summer 2007):
.58 rifle musket - 28
.54 rifle musket - 35
Sharp's carbines - 150
Richmond carbines - 65
Burnside carbines - 14
Spencer - 1
Merrill - 1
Gallagher - 1
Navy Colt pistols - 40
Army Colt pistols - 152
Adams & Deane pistols - 43
Kerr pistols - 5
Sabres & belts - 364
The correct number of Sharp's carbines from the earlier report is indeed 150. Also, the 48 Adams & Deane pistols from the earlier report probably should have read 43, with an additional 5 being Kerr pistols as clarified in the above figures.
